Why “You Got Me” Proves The Aces Are Still Indie Pop Queens
Written by: Keyali Mikaela
I’ve been a fan of The Aces since their early days, and honestly, every time they drop something new, it feels like catching up with a friend who just keeps getting better. Their new single, “You Got Me,” is a perfect example of how they’ve grown without losing the heart that made us fall in love with them in the first place.
Cristal Ramirez’s vocals are as stunning as ever — ethereal, confident, and full of feeling. This song nails that nervous, exciting moment when you realize you’re falling for someone but aren’t quite ready to say it out loud. The sapphic love story is subtle yet clear, which feels so important and genuine, especially in today’s pop landscape.
Musically, the track leans into a shimmering disco-pop sound, which is a fun and fresh twist for The Aces. Katie Henderson’s synth and guitar parts contrast beautifully, giving the song a textured feel. McKenna Petty’s bassline bops in all the right places, and Alisa Ramirez’s drums add just the right energy without overpowering the vibe. It’s danceable but intimate — the kind of song you can jam to alone or with friends.
What excites me even more is the idea that Gold Star Baby might be a loose concept album. The Aces have always evolved with each release, and this feels like a bold step forward in their storytelling and sound. I can’t wait to hear the full album when it drops on August 15 and see how “You Got Me” fits into the bigger picture.
Also, please please please — if you’re reading this, Aces — bring us a tour! I’m so ready to dance along to these new songs live and feel that energy in person. Fingers crossed we get some dates soon.
If you’ve been sleeping on The Aces, “You Got Me” is the perfect intro. For longtime fans like me, it’s proof they’re still making authentic, glittering queer pop that resonates and evolves.
