SuckerPunch by All Time Low review and tour announcement
Written by: Giulia Campora
A strong rock, electric guitar riff pulls the listener in ‘SuckerPunch,’ the newest single by Alternative Rock band ‘All Time Low.’ Lead singer of the band, Alex Gaskarth (also producer of this track), begins the song by explaining how the girl he wants treats him like something to use and discard to her liking, but he thanks her for the love and affection sarcastically (lyrics by Genius): ‘You pour your salt in my cuts/and call it seasoning/You've got the recipe right, and now you're eatin' me alive/I wanna thank you so much for all your love and affection/All your toxic intention is in overdrive.’
In the two-sentence pre-chorus, Gaskarth asks the listener two questions about the girl’s actions and how this could help his situation: ‘So can I get a witness?/Does baby need an alibi?’ This leads to the jaw-dropping chorus, in which the lead singer of All Time Low brings the listener into a whirlwind of emotions, still pouring his heart out in the following lyrics, all accompanied by the same powerful drums+electric guitar sound combo: ‘I'm just some motherfucker you're dying to suckerpunch/Come here, I'll pucker up/Kiss me while I'm falling down/You'll love it how I'm bleeding out for you.’
There goes the second verse, in which Gaskarth still dares the girl to keep using him again, and see to which lengths he can arrive: ‘Just sink your teeth in my skin, down to the skeleton/My bones were made for the beat down you've been savin' up for life/And all your restless obsessions, parasocial aggression/Chemical intervention, give me cyanide.’
After the reprise of the pre-chorus and chorus, the song goes towards the fantastic bridge, which lowers the background alternative-rock to a softer guitar sound, followed by these powerful lyrics, in which Gaskarth still tries to seek a witness to testify that his situation is real, and he is not going insane in the process: ‘So can I get a witness/'Cause I been on your hitlist/Tryna mind my business/Moving on/If you got somethin' to cry about/Go on and get it out, oh.’
The song brings back the listener to the same chorus as before, with the rock sound added, reminding them the reason why this group is still going on after 20 years of career: their sound and lyrics is timeless and millennials/gen z are always going for the good ol’ alternative rock sound that was so popular in the 2000s.
